Philip Rivers
From Bolts from the Blue
Philip Rivers was a quarterback for North Carolina State and the Chargers acquired in a draft day trade that was forced by Eli Manning's refusal to play for the San Diego team. Rivers might have a had a chance to beat out the incumbent Drew Brees if not for a lengthy holdout during contract negotiations. He then had to sit out for the next two years as Brees continued to man the position, but eventually got the starting gig in 2006. He currently occupies the position of "God" to Charger fans.
Quarterback class of 2004
Rivers was one of three quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft along with Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning. Each of the three players have been voted to the Pro Bowl since becoming starters, none have produced a season with a losing record (although each has had an 8-8 season). Roethlisberger and Manning have each led their teams to a Super Bowl while Rivers is still waiting to get to the big game. They have been compared favorably to the Quarterback class of 1983, which included Hall of Fame quarterbacks Dan Marino, John Elway, and Jim Kelly.[1]
Marmalard
Marmalard is a character from Kissing Suzy Kolber based on Philip Rivers. Marmalard's actions are completely fictitious, but the pictures of Philip Rivers are used in his representation. It's supposed to be funny.
Golden Jersey #17
Although there have been seven different Chargers players that have worn the #17 jersey, it would be silly for me to pretend there was actually a competition here.
